About Borneo Orangutan, sumatran orangutan and the different between them
Get wellknow aliitle bit about Borneo orangutan, how they life and what different with Sumatran orangutan including what the orangutan habitat condition today
Orangutan consist between two different word " Orang" and "Hutan" in malay language, mean peoples of the forest.
In the pass the local peoples that the orangutan was simply a person hiding in the trees, trying to avoid
having to go to work or become a slave, that is way they did not hunt them
Among other 4 great apes Orangutans are unique , this is the only great apes comes from Asia and the others all come from Africa.
The fossils have been found across Asia in Java, China and Vietnam but now just could be found at two areas Borneo island and Sumatera island which
then they devide in sub species – the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).
An other Unique things from orangutan are : they are one of our closest relatives which is share nearly 97% of same DNA with human
and they are among the most intelligent animals on earth. On the other hand Orangutans are the only primarily arboreal great ape and are
actually the largest tree living mammal in the world. The other great apes do climb, travel and build sleeping nests in trees, but they are
considered semi-terrestrial, spending a considerable portion of their lives on the ground.
As the tree living mammal, orangutan used the forest canopy alot than forest floor. The branchiation is
the way they travelling at the forest canopy, They move from tree branch to an other branch.
Also they do most their activities on the tree, they make nest for sleeping on the tree even sometime away up 60 m
from the ground, they find the food mostly on the tree, mating and give birth also on the tree top.
Sometime they come down to the forest floor for short travelling or looking additional food such as looking for termite.
Some might say orangutans have four hands instead of two hands and two feet. This makes them graceful and agile while climbing
through the trees but it makes walking on the ground somewhat slow and awkward. That is why the orangutan is at a great
disadvantage on the ground, and why the orangutan rarely comes down from the treetops. Their food is there, their home is there and they are safer there.
Orangutan life :
In the wild an orangutan could reach about 35 to 40 years old, there are alot factor influent their lifespan, most importance one is the food supply in the forest,
is the food in the forest equal with their population ( This is our big responsible to keep the forest from many destruction as we had today ).
Actually orangutan could get 50 years old even more when they stay at captivity where they can get the food very easy
Orangutan is semi solitary creature, unlike the other great apes who live in the group where there are dominant male as the king with several female surrounding,
orangutan live by themself, they have opportunity to socialize and gather in small groups for short time only In times of great abundance of food.
Adult female always stay with the baby until the baby and male mostly solitary
The orangutan has the longest childhood dependence on the mother. The mother have to protect and make sure that her baby had enough to learn for survive,
learn to how, what and where they can find the food because there are a lot different food they can have in the forest , bark, leaves, flowers,
a variety of insects, and most importantly, over hundreds kinds of fruit. The babies nurse until they are about six years of age.
The young males may stay close by their mothers for a few more years but the females may stay until they are into their teens, allowing them to
observe mothering skills as they watch their younger sibling being raised by the mother. Orangutan females only give birth about once every 8 years.
(This results in only 4 to 5 babies in her lifetime.) This is why orangutan populations are very slow to recover from disturbance.
What the different : the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus): 1. from Haberdasher genatical study borneo specied divide in other 3 sub species : Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus found in west coast of Borneo, Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii found at Central Borneo and Pongo pygmaeus morio
found at east part of Borneo whereas Sumatran orang utan only 1 species : Pongo abelii.
2. Compared to Borneo orangutan, Sumatran orangutan has lighter fur, and longer beard .
The cheek pouch more narrow and slender body shape. Male Weight for Borneo orangutan discovered until 150 kg,
while the Sumatran orangutan males weighing approximately 80 kg. This conditioning could be influenced by supply
of the fruit tree and variety of the food in the forest
3. The other different is on the adult male orangutan. Borneo orangutan used forest floor quite alot than Sumatra borneo that
always stay on the tree due there is the highest predator Sumatran tiger where it could not find at Kalimantan. Some information said that
Sumatra orangutan very capable to jump from branch to other tree branch.
The real orangutan fact today:
What Orangutan need ?... This question is very simple and easy to answer but it is very difficult... not difficult to start but it is really difficult to STOP.
During the early 2000s, orangutan habitat has decreased rapidly due to logging and forest fires. A major factor in that period of time has been the conversion of vast areas of tropical forest to palm oil plantations in response to international demand. Palm oil is used for cooking, cosmetics, mechanics, and biodiesel. Hunting is also a major problem as is the illegal pet trade. Orangutans may be killed for the bushmeat trade, crop protection, or for use for traditional medicine. Orangutan bones are secretly traded in souvenir shops in several cities in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Mother orangutans are killed so their infants can be sold as pets, and many of these infants die without the help of their mother. Since 2004, several pet orangutans were confiscated by local authorities and sent to rehabilitation centers.
Some major conservation centers in Indonesia including those at Tanjung Puting National Park and Sebangau National Park in Central Kalimantan, Kutai in East Kalimantan, Gunung Palung National Park in West Kalimantan, and Bukit Lawang in the Gunung Leuser National Park on the border of Aceh and North Sumatra that run by some organisations ( NGO ) are working hard for the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction of orangutans as well as keep their habitat not destroyed by irresponsible person
